Areti Mourka graduated from the Department of Physics, University of Crete, Greece in 2007. She then stayed on for a further two years to attend the MSc program 'Microelectronics and Optoelectronics' which she completed successfully in 2009. Her MSc research project was carried out at the Institute of Electronic Structure & Laser Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas (IESL-FORTH), under the supervision of Prof. C. Fotakis (Professor of Physics University of Crete and Director of IESL-FORTH) and Dr. M. Farsari (Researcher at IESL-FORTH). Its subject was "2D and 3D deposition of biocompatible and biological materials by laser-based techniques" and it involved the fabrication of three-dimensional structures using two-photon polymerization and Laser Induced Forward Transfer (L.I.F.T.) and their subsequent functionalization with biomolecules. Areti joined the group as a PhD in May 2009, focusing on the plasmon enhanced manipulation and sorting of nanoparticles.
